id readersEveryone has a friend that uses a fake ID, whether it’s to buy some cheap booze or get a fresh tattoo. Though buying a fake ID — whether it’s fabricated or an old friend’s real one — seems like a good idea, it will likely result in significant consequences.

Before you purchase a fake ID, keep this in mind
ID readers have become common use in most business establishments — liquor stores can use magnetic card scanners while the bouncer at your club of choice uses an in-hand license scanner. Technology has evolved to the pinnacle of efficiency; you can even download ID checking software right to your phone along with apps for barcode scanning, mobile payment methods, and RFID programs.

1. It’s taken away
All that money you spent on a fake has gone to waste: the bouncer took your ID. If they don’t call the cops, you’re in luck and you get to go home. But keep in mind the bartender or the bouncer might turn in your ID at the end of the night which can lead to legal issues and penalties. If you go to college in Pennsylvania, your academic institution may impose some repercussions of their own, namely, kicking you out of college.

2. Payments and Fines
This is the most common type of penalty imposed on individuals, especially if you’re a first-time offender. However, the fine isn’t going to be a few dollars — for a fake ID, fines range anywhere from $500 to $1,000. If it’s a felony offense, you can pay near $100,000, just from being caught by an ID reader. The increasing rate and accessibility of RFID scanners have made it even easier for businesses to determine if your ID is a fake or not.

3. Jail
If you’re charged with carrying a fake ID, there’s a chance you might be headed to the slammer. Magnetic card readers can spot a fake ID in seconds and you can get a year-long sentence depending on your state and if this isn’t your first offense. If you’re charged with a felony, you can face up to 10 years in jail time.

Issues regarding security are at an all-time high and liability claims can be disastrous for a business. With so many people using ID readers, it’s better to wait a few years and save yourself the troubles that come with owning a fake ID.
